GUS 1177 – Climate Justice: Flooding in the City

This course provides an introduction to climate justice within the Philadelphia region. It explores the links between environmental justice, urban dynamics, and policy responses to pressing climate issues. By examining the recently released ‘PennEnviroScreen,’ a novel State Environmental Justice Screening tool created to reflect the revised environmental justice policy, the course critically evaluates how climate policies intersect with and impact diverse challenges in a historically industrial region.
This course delves into the complex relationship between climate change and social equity, focusing on the difficulties marginalized communities face. It investigates the localized impacts and policy implications of rising sea levels an increased flood risks in various neighborhoods in Philadelphia and neighboring counties. The course breaks down strategies that promote community resilience in the face of challenges related to climate change. Focusing on grassroots efforts and their impacts on urban policy, students will develop introductory skills in geographic inquiry to visualize and interpret climate justice, urban dynamics, and policy development. They will assess the strengths and weaknesses of current climate policies and explore avenues for advocating equitable solutions.
