Urban Farming Book – Vern Compas
A newly written and published book during Covid-19 Pandemic and lock downs , its author Prof. Vern Compas devoted his time in his garden and at the same time writing his piece, “Crafting An Innovative Urban Organic Garden: Unlocking The Secrets of Growing Plants in the City”. The book highlighted several models of urban gardening such as; Container Gardening, Vertical Gardening, Aqua Bonsai Gardening, Micro-greens, Hydro-phonics and Aqua-phonics Gardening in support of the Plant, Plant, Plant program of the Department of Agriculture and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of which 11 of the SDGs are related to it.
The author also discusses that urban farming is an alternative livelihood program for urban dwellers most especially among depressed communities for sustainable income. Among middle class urban dwellers this urban farming can be an alternative business that can be part of the “new normal”. Aside from that, the author presented prototype urban garden models that the readers can follow and do in his/her small or large vacant spaces. Also, the prototypes can be use for outdoor and indoor setting.
Lastly, the Philippine Department of Agriculture Sec. William Dar issued a 2-page Foreword of this book and the President of Kalinga State University (KSU) Dr. Eduardo Bagtang gave an endorsement message both in appreciation of the writing and publication of this book.
