Trudeau pledges continued support for Haiti, $45M toward “climate resilience” in Caribbean | FULL

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Thursday that Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected light tactical vehicles (MRAP) supplied by Canada would arrive in Haiti “in the coming days” and that the government would deploy Navy vehicles off the Haitian coast.

Trudeau also announced $1.8 billion to strengthen border and maritime security across the Caribbean.

He said Canadian Navy ships were not being deployed to Haiti to “intercept migrants,” stressing that the Navy’s presence on the Haitian coast would solely be to help control gang activity. He said the presence of coast guard ships had “significantly dissuaded” Haitian gangs from using waterways in the past “as an extra sphere of influence.”

Trudeau also announced $45 million in funding on Thursday to support organizations in the Caribbean working to improve disaster preparedness and “climate resilience.” He said Canada would support “nature-based” solutions to climate change and protect biodiversity in the Caribbean.
