Scaling Up Nutrition In Namibia: Urban Gardening | Documentary

In 2020/21, NAFSAN in partnership with the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia (SDFN – https://www.shackdwellersnamibia.com) and the Eloolo Permaculture Initiative implemented this innovative project, which combined organic Urban Gardening with interactive nutrition education. Thanks to the support from the global Scaling-Up-Nutrition Movement (https://scalingupnutrition.org) we were able to tackle key nutrition challenges in Windhoek’s informal settlements.

As highlighted in this documentary, the project provided practical assistance, training, information and resources (such as tools, seeds and small fruit trees) to community members to support them in establishing and maintaining their own urban gardens (https://www.nafsan.org/gardening). The project also inspired healthier families and communities, through nutrition education (www.nafsan.org/covid-19-response), for instance on the long-term effects of malnutrition, the importance of the first 1,000 Days (https://www.rightstart.com.na), and how to move towards and maintain a healthier and more diverse diet. With support from GIZ Namibia’s Farming-for-Resilience (F4R) Project, NAFSAN is currently also developing its interactive and practical nutrition training approach further, which is then going to be scaled up through its member organisations and government partners.

As from early 2023, the project will be scaled up in at least two more regions with kind assistance from the Namibian Chamber of Environment (https://n-c-e.org) and its donors, while NAFSAN continues to develop itself as a vibrant umbrella body for Civil Society, Academia and the Private Sector within and in addition to Namibia’s Food and Nutrition Security Coordination Structures (https://www.nafsan.org/nfns).
