How AI-enabled initiatives have impacted these Indian sectors in 2022


By Nidhi Bhardwaj: In India, public funding for the Digital India mission increased by 67 percent from last year to Rs10,676 crores in 2022-23; the mission outlines a plan to use AI to promote financial inclusion, supplement the education sector, and transform urban infrastructure. States such as Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Telangana are already utilising AI-based tools to support law and order, increase agricultural productivity, and improve health care delivery.

The AI market in India is expected to grow at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 20.2 percent to $7.8 billion by 2025.

Startups in India have contributed to India’s GDP in addition to government initiatives. Experts believe that AI will account for 400-500 billion dollars in India’s GDP by 2025, accounting for 10 percent of the country’s $5 trillion GDP target.

2023 is knocking the doors , and the world looks forward to the accomplishment of big goals. First, let’s know how 2022 has been like for India’s AI in the primary sector, including agriculture, education and health.


As of March 2022, India had an estimated 1000 agriculture startups working with the government in agtech. Furthermore, $1.6 billion in funding has been recorded, mentioned Nasscom.

The top government aid initiatives that have resulted in the improvement of the agricultural system include the National Agriculture Market, and eNAM – a pan-India electronic trading platform. The National Sustainable Agriculture Mission aims to increase agricultural output by incorporating sustainable technologies. Agriculture has a national e-Governance Plan that prioritises funding for modern technologies such as the blockchain, machine learning, drones, and AI.

Farmers in this area benefit from the use of GPS, GIS, and satellite imagery. GPS-enabled devices, for example, can be used to guide drones and aid in better irrigation practices.

The startups that cater to GPS, GIS, and satellite imagery are beneficial to farmers who are dealing with continuous yield monitoring and unpredictability associated with the entire process. Crop health data, such as the type and extent of disease manifestation, can also be recorded. These inputs are critical in guiding decisions about irrigation and fertiliser requirements.

As a result, farmers can take prompt action to mitigate damage and associated costs. According to data, India’s agricultural sector accounts for more than 19 percent of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions.Technology has aided in the control of various imprudent and polluting practices. Startups such as CropIN, AgroStar, DeHaat, Fasal, and SatSure are addressing the aforementioned issues.

Indian insurance and agriculture firms such as Mahindra Agri and Max Bhupa are working in tandem with government’s PM Fasal Bhima Yojana for monitoring AI in crop and drought. Furthermore, according to a report from the Indian Council on Global Relations, the continued use of AI in agriculture may result in a significant increase of farmer’s income.


In accordance with the NEP (National Education Policy), 2020, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced Artificial Intelligence as a subject in class IX and class XI in their affiliated schools beginning in the 2020-2021 school year.

In August 2022, the Minister of State for Education, Annpurna Devi, during a discussion in Lok Sabha, emphasised on AI programs like Diksha portal. This portal incorporates AI tools to provide self-paced learning, and is built on open source technology to provide content for school education in states/UTs and QR coded energised textbooks for all grades (one nation, one digital platform). But how far India has come from the 2021 UNESCO’s State Education report, which highlighted the 11.16 lakh teaching positions vacant in schools, highlighting lack of teachers.

According to the recent data shared by the Ministry of Education on Diksha platform, it stated, “Till date, DIKSHA has 15 million students enrolled in various courses. According to the courses launched, more than 47 lakh teachers have directly benefited from NISHTHA (National Initiative for School Heads’ and Teachers’ Holistic Advancement) and Continuous Professional Development (CPD) courses delivered through the DIKSHA Platform. DIKSHA has 2,91,168 e-contents as of 14 July 2022. The total number of QR coded textbooks currently available is 6477.” This number, may undoubtedly bridge the gap between efficient learning for teachers and students via this AI-enabled platform.

Research stated that the cloud deployment model in India has increased by 60 percent in 2022, indicating an increase in cloud experience with an improvement in overall educational experience by 2023 and in the coming years.

Companies such as Miko, an AI-powered companion robot for children, provide services such as talking, responding, educating, entertaining, and understanding the child’s needs, emotions, likes, and dislikes. These companies gained momentum in the Covid along with other startups building an online ecosystem for children to learn faster, as claimed.

India saw growth of many AI education startups in 2022 like HackerRank, iNurture Square Panda, and many more, with numerous other startups expected in 2023.


Google recently announced its collaboration with Apollo Hospitals in India to improve the use of deep learning models in x-rays and other diagnostic purposes at the Google for India 2022 event. According to World Economic Forum data, nearly 64 doctors are available per 100,000 people in India, compared to the global average requirement of 150 per 100,000.

According to the report, poor healthcare kills 16 lakh Indians each year, primarily in rural India, which is home to more than 70 percent of the population. Has India recently taken initiatives to save the suffering population? Well, predictive analytics powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) for early detection can be a powerful tool for targeted public health interventions, particularly in areas with limited healthcare capacity and delayed disease detection capabilities outside of urban areas and has been adopted to cater it.

The adoption of deep learning technology and automated intervention provides opportunities to bridge these inequities and achieve AI maturity in India’s $372 billion healthcare market in this and coming years. To make it happen, companies like Google, Microsoft, Meta and Apple have collectively spent $3 billion in 2021 and doubled the investments this year along with rising growth of a few notable startups such as, Pharmeasy, HealthifyMe, Healthplix, DocTalk and many more.

AI algorithms have augmented in the healthcare space, from early disease diagnosis, drug discovery trials, and precision in patient monitoring to self care. According to statistics, AI spending in India is expected to reach $11.78 billion by 2025, with a $1 trillion boost to the Indian economy by 2035.

When India went into total lockdown during the pandemic, AI-powered startups like MyHealthcare came to the rescue.This Nasscom recognised startup built AI based solutions by adopting specialty care EMR solutions, voice-based CPOE and AI-enabled CDSS, that deliver personalised healthcare services to their patients. AI is already being integrated into diagnostic algorithms for screening for diseases ranging from cancer, diabetic retinopathy, to cardiovascular disease. And 2023 looks forward to many more such collaborations, and startups.

Outlook on AI future expansion

When asked on the future of AI in concern to agriculture, health and education, Mr. Ravinder Rathi from Quarks technology said, “AI-enabled precision farming and precision irrigation has helped farmers to increase their crop yields while using fewer resources. The usage of AI-powered sensors, and drones to give them detailed information about the condition of their fields and crops, impacted the agriculture sector. AI-enabled crop monitoring, livestock monitoring and disease detection systems can detect diseases in crops and livestock and alert the farmers to take corrective action.”

He further added, “In Education, learning can now be personalised using AI-enabled learning systems which use AI-powered algorithms. These systems analyse a student’s performance and suggest personalised learning content that is tailored to the student’s needs. And there are AI-powered chatbots for student support.”

Medical imaging and disease diagnostics are some of the AI driven initiatives used by India in 2022 to detect, diagnose, and treat diseases more accurately than traditional methods. Also, AI technology can be now used to manage clinical trials more efficiently,” Rathi concluded.
