China’s Lunar New Year travel rush begins amid a surge of COVID-19 in the country and fears the virus will spread even faster than it already has. Beijing has suspended social accounts of vocal critics, while new cases of subvariant XBB.1.5 are still spiking in the U.S., raising questions about what comes next for Canada. Touria Izri explains.

Some Canadian tourists in Mexico’s Sinaloa state are returning home after a wave of violence erupted this week, shutting airports and prompting an advisory to shelter in place. Two airports in the region have reopened with flights back to Canada scheduled on Saturday, but Canadians are still being advised to avoid travel to the region if possible. Farah Nasser has more.

Saskatchewan’s chief coroner has denied a family’s request for an inquest into the death of Shayne Turner, who died of an overdose in 2021, shortly after being discharged from the hospital. Turner’s family is disappointed, saying they felt “defeated” and believed that chances to save his life were missed. Connor O’Donovan has more.

In Toronto, Jeanette Robinson-Daley was at an exhibit at the Art Gallery of Ontario, featuring photographs of Black life across North America, when she saw a Polaroid of her father. She had seen many Polaroids like it in the family collection, but she has no idea how this one, taken sometime in the late 1960s or early 1970s, found its way into an art exhibit.
