The rapid growth in urban populations and spread urban of land development across Asia has led to the degradation and destruction of natural eco-system barriers like forests, swamps, wetlands and mangroves that protect communities from floods and landslides. Dr Gunter Fischer, Head of Flora Conservation at Hong Kong’s Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden, tells Fergus O’Rorke why cities vulnerable to the effects of climate change should be taking a keen interest in bolstering their natural defences.
