Climate Sensitive Urban Design and Environmental Outdoor Evaluation
Encouraging citizens to take over of outdoor spaces is an actual issue, exceptionally due to pandemic global situation and it involves municipalities, urban planners and architects. Their work is especially focus on proper interventions to upgrade and improve shared urban areas, in addition to increase the city’s value and the outdoor livability.
The growing attention to the energy saving issues has thus crossed the traditional boundaries that just considers the buildings’ envelope, shifting the focus towards the definitions of specific parameters and indexes to be turned to the scale of the urban blocks, public areas and transitional spaces.
The microclimatic environmental analysis is a complex assessment procedure to deepen the environmental conditions that characterize a given urban environment in order to mitigate the negative effects and exploit the positive ones to ensure optimal comfort conditions. Regardless of the variety of solutions that can be adopted, there are some considerations that urban designers and other practitioners must keep in mind to be able to create firstly, a pleasant and comfortable outdoor environment, while achieving a decarbonizing project. This is the most crucial point, since Climate Based Urban Design should support designers with an interactive, smooth and comprehensible design procedure.
During the lecture, several best practice examples of climate sensitive urban design are presented as valuable paradigms to infer valued tools and strategies for Climate Based Design. Moving from the urban morphology analysis, early-stage environmental modeling tolls are assessed, in terms of impact on processes, methods interoperability and design capability in urban design.
Therefore, the presentation focuses on key-selected parameters and their associate variables to be assessed in Climate Based Urban Design, including some key elements that help in identifying an urban space main feature:
• Convenient microclimatic outdoor parameters overview to evaluate city thermal stress;
• Assess and evaluates microclimatic mitigation solutions to be applied to urban block, or at neighborhood scale;
• Evaluate Parametric, CFD and other software solutions to be used in Environmental outdoor Evaluation for the outdoor urban environment.
