Climate Front Jammu protests against shifting of High Court to Raika Forests
With construction work for the new High Court building of Jammu and Kashmir on Raika forest land set to begin soon, climate activists have stepped up their agitation to oppose the project. In a protest today, activists of Climate Front Jammu said that the project would result in the felling of about 38,000 trees on around 813 kanals of forest land, causing irreparable damage to ecology at the local level, leading to soil erosion and flooding. Speaking to Take One News Correspondent Uttam Sawaliya, Climate Front Jammu activists said the project will endanger the lives of many tribal people relying on the forest to feed their cattle, and also pose a threat to several species of flora tribes and fauna. They stated sooner than later, the whole area will be urbanised, depriving us of the last remaining urban forest, or to be precise, the lungs of Jammu – Raika.
