SPATIAL BIOPHYSICAL-ECONOMIC IMPACTS ASSESSMENT OF NATURE-BASED SOLUTIONS (NBS) FOR URBAN CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION

Climate Change is the major threat to the stability of the cities through the amplification of related impacts. Extreme weather events are the most significant global risk, especially by considering flash floods. Recent studies claimed Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) are the new planning tool for ecologically urban development while playing a crucial role in addressing societal challenges and providing multiple benefits through the supply of Ecosystem Services (ES). This research develops a spatial assessment framework to estimate the NBS impacts in the current and future climate scenarios. Through a biophysical and economic evaluation of green roofs and bioswales implementation, costs and benefits in mitigating urban flood risk have been provided. For doing that, modelling tools and economic methods have been combined through a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment. In conclusion, the results of this research show the important role of quantitative assessments of ES to support climate change adaptation planning.
