Breaking down the barriers in downtown Portland | The Story | June 22, 2023
June 22, 2023 on The Story: Since the racial justice protests that began in spring 2020, parts of downtown Portland have been covered with plywood boards, wooden barriers or metal fencing. Nowhere has that been more prevalent than around the battered institutions of justice — buildings that, to some, represented the opposite of justice. They became the focal point of the protests and skirmishes between protesters and law enforcement. Three years later, the Multnomah County Courthouse, Justice Center and the federal Mark O. Hatfield Courthouse are still fortified. But that’s about to change, at least for one of those buildings.
