UN-HABITAT and Think City signed an Agreement of Cooperation to implement the Penang Nature-based Climate Adaptation Programme (PNBCAP) which was officiated by YB Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change, and witnessed by YAB Chow Kon Yeow, Chief Minister of Penang on, January 31, 2023 in Putrajaya.
This program was proposed in 2019 in collaboration with the Majlis Bandaraya Pulau Pinang – MBPP, the Jabatan Pengairan dan Saliran Malaysia, UN-Habitat and Think City with the support of the Penang State Government and the then Ministry of Environment and Water (KASA), now Kementerian Sumber Asli, Alam Sekitar Dan Perubahan Iklim (NRECC).
In 2022, USD 10 million in funding was approved to implement this programme under the Adaptation Fund.
This program pioneers the use of nature-based solutions as a climate adaptation strategy in Malaysia and aims to increase urban resilience and reduce the negative impacts of climate change and extreme weather patterns on public health systems and natural ecosystems.
